REPORTS FROM THE FRONT

LimeyRick:

Actually Surfside beach itself was beautiful, but the residential area was closed to motor vehicles. Basically when you come in from Freeport and over the bridge you hit a light. Right will take you to the docks and the residential areas, Striaght will take you onto surfside beach, and Left will take you towards the beach access points and motels. There is nowhere to eat once you are over the bridge apart from a Diamond Shamrock. Any food - you've got to head back into Freeport. Places to stay...well it reall depends how fussy you are. We stayed at the anchor inn and it was a dreadful place even for $35 a night.

Surfside is a beach in itself - but 2 miles up the road are the public beach access roads - you can setup/launch/ride all at the same spot and in a fair amount of space. Surfside is a busy beach.

The Freeport Inn on Broad street is the *only* one in Freeport I would stay at. Second choice would be Holiday Inn in Clute, then Days Inn Clute, then La Quinta Clute, then Ramada ( nice, but more expensive.... )

Surf side really hasn't got much of anything. There is a dive about 1 mile east of the park entrance that Sandy and I have stayed at a couple of times. I've never seen a condo in Surf Side. There was one about half way to Galveston that was converted to an apartment complex. East of the park is mostly run down rentals. West of the park entrance is mostly not so run down rentals. Honestly, I think Freeport is almost as bad and nothing there also. NO restaurants either. Just a corner store. If it's open, you can get a pizza in surfside, but it was closed the last time we were there, so make sure you bring a large ice chest. Actually, the best thing to do is stay in Galveston, and drive over the bridge to Surf Side. It takes about 20 minutes.
