I prefer this river above all others as it is not real wide. It is very serpentine and quite scenic with its many beautiful and bars, wood banks. Some of its banks are even unto miniature bluffs. In the mid summer the water reaches a low level exposing the many sand bars to a high degree of beauty. It is a very long river with its head waters about forty miles north east of Dallas, Texas. The only restriction on its entire length of about 400 miles is the Toledo Bend Dam near Jasper, Texas.
Toledo Bend is a huge impoundment about 90 miles long and famous for its large mouth bass fishing. It is readily accessible with many free paved boat ramps on its entire length in both Louisiana and Texas. There are a large number of commercial facilities on the Toledo Bend reservoir. There is a lot of fishing done on this river. People camp on the sand bars at various points. Some drive in on access roads, where some come in with their boats. Quite often during warm weather you can see people with barbecue grills going, tents setup and people swimming in the river.
