Possum Kingdom Lake
PK is one of the greatest lakes in Texas. It has some of the clearest water, and is usually a beautiful blue color. This may be because there is fairly little industry and few people upstream from this lake. PK is the northernmost lake on the Brazos River. PK is popular with scuba divers, water-skiers, and boaters of all types.
PK reminds me a bit of the Colorado River on the AZ/CA border because of the cliffs along much of the lake. The Hell's Gate area reminds me of the many deep coves within the cliffs on the Colorado. It's a very popular area where people raft up and party, too.
We haven't had many trips where there was not a fair amount of wind on some part of the lake, primarily because it twists and turns so much that there is almost always some part that is open to the wind. The area west of Sandy Beach (east of the State Park) where the river splits off into different directions has always been rough, and a blast to jump natural waves. Usually there somewhere along the cliffs (lower on the river) is glass smooth because it's protected from the wind.

PLACES TO LAUNCH
State Park
Pros: Marina fuel close by, semi-protected waters are close, central to the lake, several restaurants and places to stay are close by water
Cons: Farthest from DFW, main part of lake/river to the east has always been the roughest section I've been on
Sandy Beach
A great place to launch during the week when it's not crowded. This place can be a complete zoo on weekends. Great beach. Somewhat shallow launch when the water was down.
Brazos River Authority Ramp #1
This ramp was very shallow but useable in the summer of '98 when the water level was down several feet. The best part of this ramp is that it is close to the dam and more protected parts of the lake. It does have a fairly long no wake zone for the marina.
